THEY PROTECT HIM, HE PROTECTS THEM

Ethem Sarısülük Protesto Taksim

TURKEY – Yesterday (25. 06. 2013) thousands of people gathered  in Taksim Square, Istanbul to protest  the release of  police officer Ahmet Ş. who was accused of killing Ethem Sarısülük during demonstrations in Kızılay, Ankara. The decision of 13th Ankara Magistrates’ Court is latest proof of the double standard in corrupt judiciary system in Turkey. It is also a good example for the reasons why people of Turkey are on streets, marching against their government.

The police did everything they could to make it hard for the citizens to reach Taksim Square.  They blocked all roads potentially leading to the area, checking the passengers of private cars at checkpoints. Journalists were extensively searched by the officers despite showing their official press cards granted by the Prime Ministry’s Press and Information Office. Metro and funicular access to the square was also canceled. The demonstration was only allowed under a heavy riot police cordon.

In Ethem’s case, there was a video footage that showed a police officer firing his gun after he broke the protesters away. There were also 20 witnesses who confirmed what the video showed.

However when the prosecutor Veli Dalgalı started investigating, first, the police force did not want to release the officer’s identity. Then, they tried to prevent the Sarısülük’s lawyers to be present during autopsy.

After the post-mortem examination a 9mm bullet was found in Ethem’s head. And finally Veli Dalgalı summoned Ahmet Ş. for interrogation on June 24. Later that day he sent the police officer to court demanding his arrest. Yet, following another interrogation, the court decided to release the cop, pending trial. Justification for the decision was ‘self-defence’.

So now there is a police officer walking around freely although he is accused of killing an un-armed Ethem Sarısülük,. Meanwhile, the prisons in Turkey are filled with journalists, intellects, academics and students. No one clearly knows what many of them are accused of exactly. But, one thing for sure is that they are not suspects of murder.

The court’s decision is not a surprise. The prime minister of Turkey addressed police academy graduates at a ceremony in Ankara on the day (24.06.2013) Ahmet Ş. was released.

In his speech RecepTayyip Erdoğan said “We will not let circles who have been adversaries of Turkey or international and national media to wear down our police. I and my government congratulate our police wholeheartedly. On behalf of my country and nation, I would like to thank all my police siblings for standing up against incidents that have been going on for weeks, with sacrifice and patriotism.”

Even though the Physicians’ Association of Turkey announced that, 4 people died and 7832 were injured during the demonstrations, Erdogan still claimed that it was protesters – not the police – that were violent, and he praised the security forces for showing restraint in his speech.

Examples are many but there is a particular video that was recorded by a security camera in a car park in Antalya. It demonstrates who is violent and how much ‘restraint’ the police are showing. During the protests three un-armed young men are running away from police. They find a spot and hide. Yet the police manage to find them. You can watch the rest and make up your own mind.

Some may state that the justice system and the police force were almost always corrupt in Turkey. And that would be articulate. But, Turkey hardly ever had same the party and the prime minister in charge for duration of longer than a decade and with such political power. The AKP and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have been able to change anything they liked during this period. So, why didn’t they change the justice system and the police?

Well, as a matter fact they did. Unfortunately the two institutions which are responsible for lawfulness and security for the entire population are working under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s command. They protect him, he protects them. If you don’t belong it is very hard to find justice or feel safe.
